The German parliament has written to the European Commission to request the application of article 7 of the Lisbon Treaty – which allows that the European Council voting rights of a member state may be blocked – if Croatia does not modify its new law on extradition.
Approved on the eve of the country’s accession to the EU, the law, explains Večernji list, effectively blocks the extradition of individuals to other EU member states to face charges relating to crimes committed before the introduction of the European arrest warrant on August 7, 2002.
Berlin claims that Zagreb voted in the law to prevent the extradition of Josip Perković, a director of the Yugoslav secret police who is wanted by Germany in connection with the assassination of Stjepan Đureković in Wolfratshausen, Bavaria in 1983.
