For the first time in Spain's history, unemployment has surpassed the threshold of 6 million people, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute on April 25.
At the end of the first quarter of the year, 27.16 per cent of the workforce was unemployed, an increase of 1.14 per cent compared to the previous quarter. A population in decline, notes El País "due to the departure of immigrants and the exodus of young people looking for employment opportunities in other countries."
"Since the beginning of the crisis," continues the newspaper, "Spain has an additional 4 million unemployed people. The unemployment level has increased by 20 per cent in five years".
