Standing at 17% in opinion polls Austria’s FPÖ is likely to win 3 seats in the European elections this month, compared to the one seat it now holds. With today’s headline - “Strache a winner with Haider’s strategy,” Austrian daily Die Presse highlights the continuity in the far-right party’s leadership since the latter’s death last year. “No-one is talking about the European elections anymore,” laments the Viennese newspaper, “but only about whether the FPÖ is a Nazi party or whether its propaganda echoes that of the Nazis during their rise to power in the 1930’s.” Whether led by Jörg Haider or Heinz-Christian Strache, FPÖ strategy remains the same - playing off Austrians’ anxiety related to globalisation and immigration, its marginalisation at the hands of mainstream parties, and reclaiming an electorate which feels not only marginalised but also victimised for its supposed anti-democratic sentiments.
