On February 19, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of an Austrian lesbian couple who had filed a lawsuit for discrimination: They were demanding the right for one of the women to become an adoptive parent the other woman's biological child.
Minister for Justice Beatrix Karl announced that she would rapidly implement the decision of the court in Strasbourg, and present a bill to parliament in March. Even though the social democrats, who lead the ruling coalition, would approve of such a move, there has as yet been no initiative to change the law to give homosexuals the right to adopt a child already adopted by their partner.
