The European Commission announced on June 5 that Latvia had fulfilled criteria to join the single currency.

The Baltic country will now become the 18th member of the euro area, when it joins on January 1, 2014.

Good news for the European executive headed by José Manuel Barroso, whose management of Greece’s rescue has suddenly been called into question.
