European elections could offer Silvio Berlusconi an unexpected escape from his troubles at home, conviction for tax fraud.
Yane Yanev, the leader of Bulgarian centrist party RZS, has offered Berlusconi a place on the candidates’ list. “He’s very popular here. He would surely win,” said Yanev, adding that “he would be an excellent defender of Bulgarian interests in Brussels.”
If elected, Berlusconi would also regain the parliamentary immunity he lost when he was stripped of his Italian Senate seat, avoiding the possibility of his being arrested in connection with any of the outstanding legal proceedings against him.
