Faced with the growing tensions between the Spanish and the Catalan autonomous governments after the celebration of the 1st october self-determination referendum in Catalonia, the European commission eventually stated its position, insisting on the issue being a Spanish "internal matter", called the parties to respect Spain's "constitutional order" and to "move very swiftly from confrontation to dialogue".
