On October 2, the Italian parliament passed a vote of confidence in the government led by Prime Minister Enrico Letta. However, faced with the possible break-up of the party, Berlusconi and most of his supporters finally voted to keep Letta in office — an about-face that the Italian press has described as a "surrender", and a "rout".
