The former president of the autonomous Catalan government, Carles Puigdemont, was arrested on 25 March in Northern Germany, while travelling by car from Finland, where he had given a lecture.

Puigdemont was headed to Brussels, where he had been living in exile since last October, after being removed from power for organising an illegal referendum on Catalan independence and proclaiming the region’s independence. Spain’s judiciary has issued an arrest warrant for "rebellion". The German judiciary has 60 days to decide wether it will extradite Puigdemont to Spain.
