‘Merkel-Steinbrück, a Greek debate’

With three weeks left to run before German general elections, Greece and the economy were the dominant topics in the television “duel” between German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and her rival Peer Steinbrück, reports Ta Nea.
The social-democratic candidate notably called for a “second Marshall plan” for Greece and other crisis stricken countries, and insisted that “austerity was fatal.”
For her part, Angela Merkel did not rule out the possibility of a “third aid package” for Greece.
In the debate, Angela Merkel argued that Germany should show solidarity, but at the same time, she insisted that, as Chancellor, “she has a duty to avoid any let-up in the pressure for reforms in Greece.”
