Prime Minister Zoran Milanović's Croatian Social Democrat Party (SPD) lost Zagreb, as expected, in the second round of local elections held on June 2.

However, the SDP took the lead in Split, Rijeka and Osijek. For its part, the right-wing Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) won the majority of counties.

By avoiding a total loss, on the heels of his recent electoral defeats, Milanović "is safeguarding his authority within the SDP and the government," writes Croatian daily Vecernji list.
