On 20 June, a Bucharest court remanded Mircea Băsescu in custody on corruption charges, reports Adevărul. According to the daily Mircea, who is the brother of Romanian President Traian Băsescu, is suspected of receiving —

… €250,000 from an individual linked to the mafia in exchange for his intervention with the magistrates tasked to rule on an assault case involving the individual's father. Traian Băsescu declared that, as it stands, his brother is only guilty of keeping bad company, and emphasised that he has never intervened in the work of the police or the justice system.
