On June 24, a year after the formation of a three-party coalition and following the withdrawal of the Democratic Left in the wake of the closure of public broadcaster ERT, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras (New Democracy) announced a reshuffle of his cabinet, reports Eleftherotypia.
The socialists of PASOK have been rewarded with a greater presence in government, obtaining 11 portfolios from a total of 31. Their leader, Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos, will now also double as Greece’s Foreign Minister.
For the Athenian daily, “the restructuring has failed to compensate for the political weakeness” prompted by the ERT crisis, and the government will have one less “crutch” to lean on. Nicknamed the “mujahideen”, the new ministers will be tasked with the “urgent application” of a further “series of reforms” that aim to reassure Greece’s international creditors.
