The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) ranked second in the 1 September local election in Saxony (27.5 percent of votes), where the conservative CDU topped the polls, and in Brandenburg (22.5 percent), where the Social democrats won. Both Land are situated in former German Democratic Republic. Although below expectations, the result marks a significant progress for the party.
