“Austerity is not the only solution,” declared Barack Obama on the occasion of Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ visit to the White House on August 8.
Eleftherotypia reports that the US President highlighted the need for a return to growth and the creation of new jobs in Greece, while emphasising that Greece must continue with reforms and the drive to reduce its debt.
The meeting between the two leaders was particularly important for Athens, which needs political support from Washington in the negotiations with the troika of its international creditors. Greece’s continued political and economic stability is also important to the United States, which relies on the country to play “a stabilising role in the Middle East, North Africa and the Balkans,” points out Eleftherotypia.
