Celebrations marking the 50 years of the Elysée Treaty are going ahead at a time when relations between the two neighbours have been marked by economic decline in France, where unemployment has reached 10.5 per cent: twice the rate in Germany.
The relationship between the two countries has also been marked by France’s intervention in Mali, which has underlined its military leadership of the Franco-German couple.
