"Iceland has decided to open up its labour market fully to Romanian [and Bulgarian] citizens from 1st January 2012",reports Timpul. The Moldovan daily is delighted, because 200,000 Moldovans already have Romanian citizenship, which enables them to work in the EU. As a member of the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area, Iceland applied in 2007 for permission to prevent Bulgarian and Romanian workers from freely entering its labour market for a period of 7 years — a measure that was also requested by a large number of EU member states (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Great Britain and the Netherlands). However, Iceland, which is a candidate to join the EU "has now sent a message that is in tune with the values of the European project", notes Timpul.
