The snap general elections on 23 July 2023, called in the middle of summer by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, in power since 2018, did not result in a strong enough victory for the right-wing People's Party to form a government. Not even a coalition with Vox will be insufficient: Santiago Abascal's far-right party confounded all expectations and recorded a lower score than in 2019.

The results come as a relief as far-right parties gain ground in many European countries and join forces with ruling parties. The election was of particular interest since Spain took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU at the beginning of July, a role it will perform until 31 December 2023.
