The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) is a network of non-governmental organisations founded in 2004. Its headquarters are in Sarajevo. It “promotes freedom of speech, human rights, transparency, democratic values and access to democracy in Southern and Eastern Europe”. The network is present in many countries inside and outside the Balkans and combines local expertise and regional cooperation. It reports on “the major topics of today : justice, organised crime, media freedom, rule of law, inequalities or climate change.”
