Modelled on the French daily Libération, De Morgen was founded in 1978 out of the merger of two Socialist Party papers. This Flemish title terms itself an “independent and progressive quality daily” and has rocked the Belgian press with its somewhat provocative editorial line. Its opinion pages provide a forum for the very diverse views of Belgian and Dutch commentators. “The Morning” is also known for its scoops and top-notch photography. The second-ranking quality daily in Flemish, De Morgen describes its readers as “young engagé urbanites with an avid interest in culture and current international events”.
