Launched in 1948 by the Simavi family, today the popular daily, whose name translates as "Liberty", is owned by the powerful Doğan industrial group, which also controls a number of other dailies including Milliyet, Sabah and Referans. Influential and deliberately controversial, Hürriyet, which mainly targets working class readers, has a fondness for emotive tone: it is charcterised by its outrage and indignation, appeals to national pride, and cheerful expressions of collective joy. The newspaper's website offers full access to all of the content of the paper edition.
