Popular and center-right, the identity of Kurier – which means Messenger – dates back to its founding in 1945 by US occupation forces, who named it the Wiener Kurier. The number one daily tabloid in Austria, it used to be the voice of opposition to the USSR, with its circulation quickly soaring to 300,000 copies. It became Kurier in 1954, it is now the fourth most read daily newspaper in Austria.
