Founded in 1992 this secular mainstream daily tabloid is widely read in the Kabylia region of Algeria. Its majority shareholder, Issad Rebrab, is also an industry close to the Rassemblement pour la culture et la démocratie, a well established political party in the region. At the height of the "black decade" (1993-2003), four of Liberté's journalists were murdered by Islamist groups.
