European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn has warned that “taxes have reached a critical level” in France, at a time when the Paris government is worried by French public despondency over the country’s fiscal regime.
In an interview with Sunday weekly Le Journal du Dimanche, Rehn points out that, in July, the European Commission already issued recommendations to Paris to the effect that: “Budgetary discipline should be implemented by cutting public spending and not by raising more taxes.”
At the same time, the European Commissioner points out that —
It is too early to speak of a European economic spring, but there are some green shoots. [...] We have warded off recession in the EU, and next year should see more decisive growth.
