The German press has taken a sudden interest in the Swedish Lutheran church. Frankfurter Rundschau has profiled Eva Brunne, the world’s first openly lesbian bishop. The daily believes that her election in Stockholm, May 26th, proves that the Lutheran church “has risen above discrimination based on gender and sexual inclination” adding that “the most remarkable fact (is that) Ms Brunne’s homosexuality was not an issue in the election campaign.” With the blessings of her church, the fifty year old bishop lives with her partner, a female pastor.
