Ukraine’s government resigned on 24 July, following the departure of two parties – Udar, led by former boxer Vitali Klitschko, an ally of president Petro Poroshenko, and Svoboda (Liberty) of the nationalist right – from the “European Choice” coalition led by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, reports Golos Ukrainy.
The coalition had failed to pass several bills presented by Yatsenyuk, some of which were required by the International Monetary Fund in exchange for 12.6bn euros in aid.
Yatsenyuk hinted his duties should be taken over by his deputy, Volodymyr Groysman. Poroshenko, meanwhile, has insisted the current cabinet must “continue its work”. He also urged the head of parliament to hold a confidence vote in the cabinet as soon as possible.
