“A giant, beside whom other peacetime politicians of the 20th and 21st centuries look like mere pygmies,” writes The Daily Mail after the death of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher on April 8.
The right-wing daily calls for Britain’s first woman PM to receive a state funeral, which would normally be reserved for sovereigns, adding that “by sheer willpower and force of conviction, she turned this country round, restoring the UK’s economy and self-belief.”
Acknowledging her role was divisive, the newspaper says: ”The immediate blow to many communities was enormous. But the alternative was national ruin.”
