This year was marked by the affirmation of political parties and separatist ideas in several countries: the N-VA Bart de Wever (Flemish nationalist) won municipal elections in Flanders, the Scottish National Party, announcing its intention to hold an independence referendum poll in Scotland; nationalists Convergencia i Unió and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, the regional polls in Catalonia and the Basque National Party the regional Basque Country elections, while in the north of Italy, although weakened, the Italian Northern League continues to represent the protest vote.
