The waters of the Danube have risen to record levels in Budapest: 8.90 metres on June 9. As it stands, however, flood barriers in the capital and elsewhere in the country are holding, explains Népszabadság. Volunteers and flood defence workers have been working around the clock under the direction of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and 1,000 people have been evacuated.
Hungary is experiencing the worst flooding in its history, notes the daily, but it has successfully prevented fatalities, while flooding in neighbouring countries has already claimed 18 lives, including 10 in the Czech Republic.
