Russia is trying to freeze Ukraine into submission. With temperatures plunging to -20°C, Moscow's repeated strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have plunged the country into glacial darkness. 80% of Ukraine is currently experiencing power cuts, while 15% of homes in Kyiv remain without heating.
While Kiev has already declared a state of energy emergency, the EU has announced that it will deploy several hundred generators to help the more than one million Ukrainians who currently lack electricity, access to water, and heating. Other member states, such as Lithuania, have also pledged similar aid on the national level.
These fresh attacks come as Ukrainian, American, and Russian delegations meet in Abu Dhabi for negotiations that could potentially lead to a peace agreement, though the issue of Ukraine's territorial integrity remains a major point of contention.
