As you know, journalism runs at a frantic pace: as soon as one article is published, we jump straight to the next. The weeks fly by, and opportunities to look back on past accomplishments are all too rare. But since press cartoons are part of Voxeurop's DNA, we make the effort at the end of each year to look back on our favourite drawings.
As we work on choosing our favourite press cartoons, we grasp a key function of the genre: to make us smile – and reflect – when current events tend to provoke the opposite response. Donald Trump's second term, the ubiquitous rise of the far right in Europe, growing political instability, economic, environmental and social crises… Describing 2025 as “gloomy” would be an understatement.
For the media, too, this is no time for celebration. Brutal USAID cutbacks at the hands of the current US administration, the unfavourable economic climate and attacks on the press have made the profession more difficult, more dangerous and more costly. But those with enough passion are still holding firm, as shown by the success of our recent donation campaign, which will allow us to continue bringing you the best of the European press.
This is also the message of these press cartoons: don't give up, keep finding things to amuse, provoke and prod you, and above all, never stop taking an interest in the world – especially when cynicism can seem so tempting. Since these press cartoons are aimed at our readers, over the last few weeks we have given you the opportunity to choose your favourites from among those we published each month.
