The European Parliament awarded the Sakharov prize for freedom of thought 2013 to Malala Yousufzai, 16, a Pakistani activist who campaigns for girls' rights to education.

Malala was seriously injured in 2012 when she was shot in the head and neck by a group of Pakistani Taliban who attacked her school bus in Mingora in the Swat valley (northwest Pakistan). According to the Pakistani daily Dawn, Malala is also one of the experts' and bookmakers' favourites to scoop the Nobel peace prize, which will be announced on October 11.
