On 10 July, the German government deported the head of the CIA in Berlin, following the discovery over the last 10 days, of two cases of alleged American espionage, reports Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. According to the newspaper, the cases involved an agent of the German intelligence service, the BND, and an officer of the German army, both of whom are suspected of having worked for Washington.
The daily adds as well as the deportation, which is viewed as an exceptional measure within NATO —
… the Chancellor has instructed [German] intelligence services to limit cooperation with partners in American services to the strict minimum until further notice.
