The Hungarian press announces the victory of the conservative FIDESZ party, which took a massive 53% of the vote in the first round of general elections on 11 April. Centre-right daily Magyar Nemzet believes "the result will mark a political watershed similar to the fall of the communist regime. No political party has ever obtained such a strong majority in the history of free and democratic elections in Hungary. The political force led by Viktor Orbán has almost two thirds of the seats in parliament, and will be free to govern without the constraint of a coalition over the next four years." Magyar Nemzetalso delightedly reports on the downfall of two longstanding parties – the MDF (Hungarian Democratic Forum) and SZDSZ (Alliance of Free Democrats) – which have been shunned by voters in the wake of political and financial scandals. At the same time, it notes that "another sign of the times, the electoral success of the extreme-right Jobbik movement, is a testament to the rage and exasperation prompted by the unresolved problems of recent decades."
