Foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq

This map, created by attacks carried out by Islamic State which left at least 129 people dead in Paris and its inner suburbs, shows the countries of origin of foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria, in particularly from European countries.

France leads these countries, with an estimated 1,200 fighters, followed by Turkey (1,000), and the UK (600). In proportion to the population, it is from Bosnia Herzegovina that the highest estimate number of jihadists originate (92 per million inhabitants), followed by Kosovo (83) and Albania (46). Among Western European countries, Belgium leads with 40 jihadists per million inhabitants, followed by Sweden (32) and Denmark (27).
