Inspectors from the EU-IMF-ECB troika have postponed their visit to Greece, which will now take place a week later than expected. The decision is widely viewed as bid to exert further pressure on the Greek government to accelerate the pace of reform in exchange for the release of a further tranche of aid, explains Ta Nea.
However, the troika itself is also under threat, points out the newspaper, which reminds its readers of the remarks made by the leader of Europe’s socialist MEPs, Hannes Swoboda, who, on December 1, argued that in view of its “lack of democratic legitimacy,” this “neoliberal” agency should be “phased out.”
In the meantime, austerity continues to wreak havoc, as emphasised by the daily’s front page drawing, which illustrates a tragic story that shocked the country: the death by asphyxiation of a teenager who attempted to heat her room with a brazier.
