… more than a third of Conservative MPs have just refused to back his legislative program because it doesn't enshrine in law his promise of a referendum on Britain's membership in the European Union.
Under pressure from UK Independence Party (UKIP), which is increasingly winning votes from their party, Eurosceptic Conservatives have been increasingly vocal in their calls for a referendum, which Cameron has attempted to defuse by pledging to hold a vote in 2017.
As it stands, he has reiterated his commitment to this policy and to the current coalition, which is slated to remain in office until 2015. However, commentators have warned that a poor performance by the Conservatives in next year’s European elections, which has already been predicted by the polls, could make his position untenable.
