Launched on 24 February, the Russian invasion of Ukraine sent shockwaves across Europe. As the EU prepares to receive tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees, Russian forces have met with fierce – and perhaps underestimated – resistance from the Ukrainian military and civilian population. Meanwhile, Belarus has joined the Russian war effort with its own armed forces. and on 27 February the EU approved the allocation of 500 million euro worth of aid to Ukraine, including arms - an unprecedented decision in the EU’s history. The aid is accompanied by significant sanctions imposed on Russia.
The Russian invasion has provoked waves of protest around the world, including within Russia itself, where thousands of protesters expressing support for Ukraine have already been arrested since the beginning of hostilities.
There has also been an abundance of press cartoons, a selection of which we gather here, reflecting the diverse sensibilities of their creators. All too frequently dismissed as trifling efforts to make readers laugh or smile at current affairs, the press cartoon is often the ideal medium of provocation and outrage when words seem bereft of all sense.
