In the United States, former president and convicted felon Donald Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday 13 July, during one of his rallies in the run-up to the presidential election on 5 November. A bullet went through Trump’s ear before he was evacuated. Two members of the public were injured and one was killed. The sniper was shot dead by the police.
The investigation has yet to determine the motive of the killer, a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, who for the moment does not appear to have acted for political reasons. Another grey area remains: how did he get so close to the Republican candidate? An independent review has already been commissioned to determine whether there were any security breaches that made the attack possible.
The assassination attempt comes at a particularly tense time in the presidential campaign. Incumbent President and candidate Joe Biden (centre-left, Democrat) is faces intense criticism, even from his own camp, while Donald Trump, who is already playing up his survivor image, is likely to come out of this attack much stronger - at least for the moment.
