Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs Evangelos Venizelos has summoned the Albanian ambassador in Athens, in the wake of a resurgence of tensions between Albanian authorities and the Orthodox Church — whose interests Greece is eager to defend in the Balkans.
On August 19, private security guards employed by municipal authorities in Permët in the south of the country, forcibly evacuated the town’s “cultural centre,” which had been occupied by Orthodox Christians since August 16, reports Shekulli. The protesters argue that the building, a former church, was abusively confiscated by Albania’s communist regime in 1968.
On the same day, the Greek consulate in Tirana was targeted by anonymous attackers. Venizelos has demanded that the Albanian government “immediately arrest” those responsible.
