The Constitutional Court on June 19 rejected Silvio Berlusconi’s appeal against a Milian Tribunal decision not to reschedule a fraud trial hearing in March 2010, which the former premier failed to attend claiming he was busy at a government meeting, reports Corriere.
The Constitutional Court rejected Berlusconi's excuse for being absent as he had brought forward the meeting, which did not have to be held at that time. In May, an appeals court upheld a one year jail term and a five-year ban from public office for the fraud.
Il Cavaliere, whose support is vital to the government led by Enrico Letta (PD), stated that this “political” sentence will not put the coalition in danger, but ministers from his party threatened to resign if the conviction is confirmed.
