Silvio Berlusconi was sentenced to one year in jail on March 7 for publishing in one of his newspapers part of a classified investigation into the role of the Democratic party (PD) in the acquisition of BNL bank by Unipol - an insurance company close to the PD - in 2005.
The former Italian Prime Minister is unlikely to go to jail as the statute of limitations term is set to expire in September, but he once again denounced his “persecution” by judges and vowed a “tough response”.
It is only one of a series of legal charges facing the conservative leader. Berlusconi will miss a March 8 hearing connected to a trial concerning underage prostitution, known as the “Ruby” scandal after the name of the alleged teenage prostitute, citing conjunctivitis.
