Lars Hedegaard, known for his radical, and often hateful, stance against Islam, was the victim of an assassination attempt at his home in Copenhagen on February 5. The historian and journalist was unharmed and the gunman, whose motivations remain unknown, escaped.
The daily, for which Hedegaard was a reporter before being dismissed due to his position on Islam, condemns the shooting: "The question is not to support Lars Hedegaard's views, but to defend the fundamental principles of the rule of law. Freedom of speech must be protected at home as well as elsewhere."
