During the inauguration of a monument to WW2 deportations, on the Day of memory (the Shoah anniversary), in Milan, the former PM said that Italy was “less guilty” than Germany and that “apart from the racial laws [1938-1943], Mussolini did well” to the country, causing outrage among Jewish communities worldwide. Berlusconi later retreated, but his remarks were heavily criticized by his campaign opponents.
