Portuguese promises, Greek guarantees

“Passos offers guarantees to European leaders, Greece promised fresh help”, runs a headline in today’s Público. The Lisbon newspaper says that leaders of the European Union [gathered in Brussels](http://www.consilium.europa.eu/showFocus.aspx?id=1&focusid=625&lang=en http://jornal.publico.pt/noticia/24-06-2011/passos-coelho-procurou-separar-as-aguas-entre-as-situacoes-de-portugal-e-da-grecia-22348665.htm) have promised Greece that they are ready to grant a new financial aid programme -- provided that the country’s parliament approves a new austerity package on June 28. During the summit, the Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, sought to establish the difference between the problems of Portugal and Greece. He assured EU leaders of Portugal’s firm commitment to applying the adjustment programme that was negotiated in return for help from Europe and the IMF.
