"Conservatives discover their love of illegal immigrants," announcesTages-Anzeiger in the wake of the Swiss national council's decision to grant the children of undocumented migrants the right to vocational training when they leave school, which has been the subject of "intense lobbying by conservatives." "On the one hand, it is more costly for the state if these children are left without job prospects and take to a life of petty crime. On the other," notes the newspaper, "these children cannot be […] punished because of their parents' legal status: one of the stipulations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which has been ratified by Switzerland." However, council members have also requested that the government renegotiate the agreement with the EU on the free movement of people, to reduce the level of welfare services to EU citizens living in Switzerland — a project which Tages-Anzeigerbelieves is unlikely to succeed.
