In a speech held on 17 January Theresa May outlined her plan for a so-called "hard Brexit". The British prime minister said that she would rather sacrifice the United Kingdom's membership of the single European market – and the freedom of circulation of goods, capital, services and people that comes with it – in exchange for "control of the number of people who come to Britain from Europe." She added that post-Brexit UK may also not accept the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.
May is expected to trigger article 50 of the EU treaty at the end of March, formally starting the two year negotiation that will lead to the UK leaving the EU.
