Late yesterday evening, the government concluded an agreement with the three opposition parties, D66, SGP and ChristenUnion, on reform of the housing market. Changes to the initial plan for housing market reform had been made necessary by a lack of support in the lower house of the Dutch parliament.
The government wants to reduce costly tax exemptions on home loans, while simultaneously relaunching the construction sector to counter the contraction of the property market prompted by the economic crisis, and promote first-time buyers’ access to housing.
