A total of 80 people were killed in the high speed Alvia train crash near Santiago de Compostel in northern Spain's Galicia region on July 23, according to latest reports. Some 94 victims are still hospitalised, including 35 in critical condition.
The train's black box confirms that the train was travelling at 190km/hour in an area where the speed limit is 80km/hour.
"It is the agony of Galicia”, writes La Voz de Galicia, underlining the quick response of local residents who rushed to help the injured.
"Galicia's local community offered such a good example the evening before last, without them the authorities could not have done what they did. The authorities pay tribute to them and applaud them."
