To attract more students, the city of Berlin plans to offer them a welcome payment of €250—€300, reports Berliner Morgenpost.

The German capital, which, according to a census published in May, has 180,000 fewer residents than previously thought, is hoping to boost federal equalisation funding for the city, which is determined by the size of its population.

The daily explains that, in view of the decline in the number of its residents, Berlin will have to repay €940m of federal funds received in 2012 and 2013, and face a €470m funding cut in 2014.
